2009-2010 Season
PRODUCTION INFORMATION:
Hamlet
by William Shakespeare
This year, New Art Theatre brings back its acclaimed production of William Shakespeare's sublime Hamlet. No play in the English language better investigates all the joy, grief, irony, and ambiguity of being human in a confusing and chaotic world. No play in the English language has been more widely studied. And no play in the English language has ever been as widely quoted, either, from ‘what a piece of work is a man' to ‘something's rotten in the state of Denmark'. This is Hamlet as you've never seen it before. Stripped to 90 minutes, New Art's production thunders with vitality, clarity, and speed without losing the extraordinary language or the complex relationships that make the play a perennial favorite. Director Robert Shea has made use of an enormous range of modern scholarship before bringing it to the stage, from Shakespearean scholars like Stanley Wells and Harold Bloom to the ideas of novelist John Updike.
